European Romantic Tradition: The Sir Walter Scott Manuscripts

Published by Primary Source Microfilm

"The National Library of Scotland's collection of manuscripts by and concerning Sir Walter Scott is the most comprehensive in the world. It includes not only the original manuscripts of six of the Waverley Novels, two major poems, and the Life of Napoleon, but a vast amount of items such as proofs, ballads and other editorial and commonplace material. The microfilm edition will be of inestimable value to students of Scott, Scottish literature and folklore." -- Dr. J. H. Alexander Senior Lecturer in English, University of Aberdeen

From the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh

The most impressive and largest collection of Sir Walter Scott's manuscripts in the world is now being made available in a major collection from this superb archive of more than 400 volumes.

Sir Walter Scott was a leading figure in the European Romantic movement. The remarkable diversity of his writing --diaries, journals, ballads, correspondence and other papers --sheds light on the development of the historical novel and provides valuable background material on the literature of the Romantic era and the popular culture of northern Britain.

Part One offers literary and historical manuscripts, including drafts and proofs of 14 of the Waverly novels. These include The Heart of Midlothian, The Fortunes of Nigel, Ivanhoe, Count Robert of Paris, Castle Dangerous, Waverly, and The Lord of the Isles as well as the manuscripts of Quentin Durward, The Betrothed and The Fair Maid of Perth.

Parts Two and Three reproduce Scott's wide-ranging personal and business correspondence, illuminating all sides of his varied career and shedding much light on contemporary literary figures.
